PROBLEM
Work starts in conversation but quickly fragments across chats, task managers, files, and separate project spaces.
  • Decisions get lost in message history
  • Turning a discussion into action requires switching tools
  • Context breaks across teams and projects
  • Traditional project-management products feel too heavy for everyday collaboration

DISCOVERY
We mapped how work moved between communication and project-management tools. Three recurring failures emerged:

• Conversations held decisions
• Tasks required switching tools and copying context
• Updates returned to chat

The core problem was context loss between discussion and execution.

DECISIONS
  • Made Chat → Task the core product interaction
  • Kept the original conversation connected to the resulting work
  • Combined chats, tasks, files, and teams within one workspace
  • Used progressive disclosure to keep a complex system approachable
  • Designed mobile-first interactions for fast everyday use

TRADE-OFF

Brief offered less customization than traditional project-management platforms, but made common collaboration flows faster and more predictable.

OUTCOME
  • Featured by Apple in “New Apps We Love”
  • Shipped as a complete cross-platform collaboration product
  • Established a unified interaction model across conversations, tasks, files, and teams

INSIGHT
The gap between communication and execution is not solved by placing chat and tasks next to each other. The product must preserve the context that turns one into the other.
